App control is an optional security practice in Microsoft Managed Desktop that restricts the execution of code on client devices. This control mitigates the risk of malware or malicious scripts by requiring that only code signed by a customer-approved list of publishers can run.

Once app control has been deployed in your environment, both you and Microsoft Managed Desktop Operations have ongoing responsibilities. For example, you might want to add a new app in the environment or add (or remove) a trusted signer. To improve security, all apps should be code-signed before you release them to users.

Application control can help mitigate these types of security threats by restricting the applications that users are allowed to run and the code that runs in the System Core (kernel). Application control policies can also block unsigned scripts and MSIs, and restrict Windows PowerShell to run in Constrained Language Mode.
