Sometimes we need to be in two places at once. You might be at home, on vacation, or out of the country and need to access your work device. Getting access to your work computer may be difficult in any of those scenarios unless you’ve set up Remote Desktop on a Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise PC.
Remote Desktop allows you to connect to a Windows 10 device on Windows, Android, iOS and macOS from afar. It provides easy access to all your apps, files, and network resources.
How to set up Remote Desktop
Follow these instructions on the device you want to control remotely. First, you’ll need to check the Windows edition of your PC. Make sure you’re running Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise by entering in ‘About your PC’ in the search box on the taskbar and selecting it from the list of results.
Here, you will find all the information regarding your PC.
On the About your PC page, check your edition of Windows 10 under Windows Specifications. You'll need to be running either Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise to use Remote Desktop. If you have Windows 10 Home, you need a upgrade before you can set up Remote Desktop because it can connect to a device that has Remote Desktop set up but can't host a remote desktop connection. To do that, select Change product key or upgrade your edition of Windows and refer to this support article, Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro.
After verifying that you are running Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise, go to the search box and enter in ‘Settings’, then select it from the list of results.
In Settings, enter ‘Remote Desktop’ and select Remote desktop settings.
In Enable Remote Desktop, make sure the feature is turned on.
Select Confirm to turn on Remote Desktop.
Additional options are available to customize your Remote Desktop, just select Show settings to see what you can change.
You can manage power and sleep settings here.
In Advanced Sharing settings, you can adjust the separate network profiles created by Windows for each network you use (private, guest, and public). Within each drop-down, you can choose to share your network, files, printers, and passwords with people on the network. When adjusting these settings, each option will give you a brief description on what people can access while on the network. For example, turning on password protected sharing will only allow people who have a user account and password on this computer to access shared files, attached printers, and the public folders.
Next, scroll down to How to connect to this PC and make note of the name of your PC, you’ll need it later.
If you want to rename your device, go back to the About page and rename it.
Go back to the Remote Desktop settings, select people who can remotely access this PC under User Accounts. It’s important to add or remove user accounts that have access to this PC for security purposes. For example, if you’re enabling Remote Desktop for your work device to access a project that isn’t public, you might want to limit who has access.
Once User Accounts have been added, make note of the one you wish to use for Remote Desktop.
